Formed in 1991 by Tanya Donelly (formerly of Throwing Muses and the Breeders) with brothers Thomas and Christopher Gorman (formerly of Verbal Assault), Belly became known for a blend of spirited guitar rock, countrified pop, and Donelly’s haunting lyrics and voice. Thee band’s 1993 debut album, Star,
was met with both critical acclaim and commercial success. It’s follow-up King, released in 1995, was the result of a more fully realized band with the addition of bassist Gail Greenwood (L7, Bif Naked, Gang of Four) who joined the band in early 1993. King captured the band’s unique ability to craft songs that were both introspective and aggressive.
